1. High-Density Down-Proof Fabric: The Fundamental Physical Barrier
Down-proof fabric is a specialized inner fabric used to encase down or synthetic fiber fillings. Its core function is to prevent fine down filaments from escaping through the fabric's pores.
The anti-down leakage capability of this fabric primarily depends on its weaving density. In the industry, this is typically denoted by "T," representing the total number of warp and weft yarns per square inch. A higher T count means smaller gaps between the yarns, resulting in better down-proof performance. For example, high-density fabrics ranging from 400T to 500T can effectively block the vast majority of down filaments, whereas regular fabrics ranging from 190T to 290T are generally used in scenarios with relatively lower anti-leakage requirements.
In addition to weaving density, some down-proof fabrics undergo post-finishing treatments, such as coating or calendering, to further reduce the fabric's pores and enhance their down-proof properties. This physical barrier serves as the first line of defense to ensure that core linens do not leak filling during use and washing.
2. Quilting Techniques: Structural Support for Filling Stability and Fluffiness
Quilting is a technique that uses stitches to penetrate the top and bottom fabrics, dividing the central filling into several independent sections. Its function is mainly reflected in two aspects:
First, it fixes the filling and prevents shifting. Without quilting, the filling in core linens tends to gather at the bottom or edges after being subjected to pressure or washing, leading to localized thinning and reduced thermal retention. The grid or strip partitions formed by quilting "lock" the filling in place, ensuring an even distribution.
Second, it maintains fluffiness. A well-designed quilting pattern can restrict the excessive compression of the filling to some extent, allowing it to remain naturally expanded within its designated sections. Some premium core products utilize three-dimensional quilting (such as box stitching), which adds a baffle between the top and bottom fabrics. This creates relatively independent spaces for each section, not only avoiding the "cold bridge" effect caused by direct compression at the seams but also providing ample room for the filling to expand, thereby enhancing overall thermal insulation.
3. Process Synergy: The Coordination of Fabric and Sewing
Down-proof fabric and quilting techniques work in tandem in practical applications. Even if the fabric density is sufficiently high, oversized quilting stitches or excessively thick threads can still create needle holes that serve as channels for down leakage. Therefore, standardized core linen production typically employs fine needles and threads while maintaining an appropriate stitch density. Some products even undergo seam taping to further seal the needle holes.
For hotel procurement, when evaluating core linens, buyers can comprehensively assess their anti-down performance and craftsmanship level by observing the tightness of the fabric and the uniformity and density of the quilting stitches, in addition to reviewing the filling parameters.
