During this process, the cotton fibers, originally flat and ribbon-like with natural twists, undergo severe and irreversible swelling. The cross-section of the fiber expands from a "kidney shape" to nearly circular, and the natural surface wrinkles disappear. Because mercerization alters the microstructure of cotton fibers, these linens are more sensitive to chemical reagents during washing. For instance, mercerized cotton is relatively sensitive to acidic substances and requires prompt cleaning if exposed to them. Furthermore, to preserve their luster and softness, strong alkaline detergents should be avoided, and professional softening processes may be required during laundering. Given the stringent requirements for raw materials (such as long-staple cotton) and processing, the procurement cost of mercerized linens is typically higher than that of regular pure cotton linens.
